Marian University Hosts Feast of Ideas With Symposium on Work

Marian University is inviting the public for a “feast of ideas” around the theme: “Work: A Small but Mighty Word,” on March 12 and 13.  This is Marian’s Academic Symposium – a showcase of faculty, staff, students, emeriti and alumni, as well as outside experts covering a variety of topics centered on work.

The Academic Symposium, a tradition for years at Marian, was paused during COVID.  Now it is back with gusto.  The word “symposium” comes from the ancient Greeks – who, after a feast, would have an exchange of ideas and revelry.  The concept evolved into a meeting or conference to exchange ideas.  Marian’s version is a feast of ideas – attendees will have many sessions to choose from – all are 50 minutes in length, with an opportunity to ask questions.  And the event is Free.  Come for a few sessions, or stay for the day.

If you are in a business or non-profit organization, if you are recruiting college students for your organization, if you are a thought leader, or just someone with a curious mind, Marian’s Academic Symposium has something for everyone.  Some highlights include:

  • “Who/What Am I, When I Am No Longer a…”  Rick Parks, Former CEO, Society Insurance and Adjunct Professor at Marian, along with other leaders talking about the identity crisis when one steps down from a high-profile position.
  • “You Can’t Say That in Here: The First Amendment in the Workplace”  Alan Johnson, JD, Dean of Faculty and Graduate Studies at Marian.
  • “How Can We be Heard in the Workforce?”  Business Students from Marian.
  • “The Work of Healthcare: What is AI’s Role?”  Cheryl Seelig, D.H.A., Associate Dean of Nursing; Christine Laurent, Ph.D., Professor and Heather Egan, Clinical Placement Coordinator at Marian.

There will also be sessions tackling issues such as Human Labor Trafficking and Sex Trafficking, Rehabilitation of Incarcerated Individuals and more.

Marian’s Academic Symposium begins on Tuesday, March 12, at 6:00 pm, with an evening panel on “The Declining Workforce: The Pain of Shortage and What Employers Can Do to Address the Decline.”  The Symposium continues on Wednesday, March 13th from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.  All sessions will be at Marian University’s campus at: 45 South National Avenue, in Fond du Lac.  Please enter through the Welcome Center at the Stayer Center.  Registration is required for a free lunch, which will be available before the Noon session.
